Both the EU and the Southern Mediterranean Countries face common energy challenges: Diversification and security of energy supplies, transportation, market reforms, development and modernisation of energy infrastructures, etc.
As such, the UfM Paris declaration has adopted as one of its key priorities the Mediterranean Solar Plan (MSP) which involves not only renewable energy policy, production and transmission, but also the promotion of energy efficiency. It also targets the build-up of 20 GW of renewable energy productive capacity by 2020.
The Paris declaration has given the Secretariat the mandate “to explore the feasibility, development and creation of a Mediterranean Solar Plan”. Within this context, the Energy Division of the Secretariat will coordinate, in close cooperation with the UfM Member States and the European Commission, the elaboration of the MSP Master Plan, and the identification, labelling and promotion of concrete pilot projects.
